Three different jobs.
Choose the right one.

A water filter, a softener and a reverse-osmosis system can complement each other. They treat different concerns and are not interchangeable.

Whole-home filtration

A main-line filter treats water before it reaches the taps on that supply. Sediment and carbon media are selected for specific goals such as particles or taste and odor. Ask what the actual model is documented to reduce; the word “filter” does not promise every type of treatment.

Ion-exchange softening

A softener reduces hardness minerals through ion exchange. That can help address hard-water scale, but softening alone does not establish drinking-water contaminant reduction. Size it around measured hardness and household use, and include regeneration and salt care in the plan.

Kitchen reverse osmosis

Reverse osmosis treats drinking and cooking water at a dedicated tap. The membrane, prefilters and postfilters work as a system. Compare verified model performance, dispensing rate, drain-water efficiency and replacement parts. Tank, tankless and mineralizing configurations differ.

When does a combination make sense?

If whole-home hardness and kitchen drinking-water preferences are separate goals, compare a combined package with separate equipment. Check flow, space, maintenance and total cost for every component rather than adding treatment stages without a reason.

Begin with local context and your property.

A utility’s report describes its public supply. It does not measure every condition inside an individual home. Review your supplier’s report, discuss what you notice and use appropriate measurements to help select equipment.
